My Family

I live in a family that is impacted by what I do, and I am impacted by it; I learn about the world in safety and a loving nurturing environment.

Goal 1: Indigenous people in Alberta have access to culturally appropriate and safe HIV testing and treatment.

• How can I prevent the spread of HIV and protect my family’s wellbeing?
• How can I talk to my family about HIV and testing?

• Do I have the latest HIV information to talk knowledgeably to my family about HIV testing?
• Do I know the rights my family has to access culturally appropriate treatment?

• Do I have the support I need to access testing for my family?
• Am I emotionally prepared to support a family member who tests positive?

• Are my family and I able to access and an Elder or spiritual support who is knowledgeable about HIV?
• If that person is me, am I willing and able to offer spiritual support to families seeking support to access culturally appropriate testing or treatment methods?

Goal 2: Indigenous people participate in decision making related to HIV policies and programs and take the lead in developing and delivering prevention and support services for HIV and related issues for Indigenous people.

• Am I willing to put into practice HIV prevention tools?
• Can I provide prevention tools to my family?
• Am I able to identify and address barriers my family may experience?
• How do I protect others from the impact of HIV and other STBBIs?

• Am I willing to facilitate and participate in a process that allows my family to become knowledgeable about HIV?

• Am I concerned about the potential and existing impacts of HIV on my family?
• Am I emotionally prepared to support a family member who tests positive?

• How do I make use of the cultural teachings provided by family members and Elders?
• How do I provide access to cultural teachings about HIV and healthy sexuality to my family members?

Goal 3: HIV services in Alberta are culturally competent, & culturally safe.

• What do I need to do to ensure my family members feel safe accessing HIV services?
• Am I able to tell my family members what I need to feel safe?

• Do I know what my family’s understanding of culture is?
• What is my understanding of culture that I can share with families?

• Do I know what my family needs culturally to feel supported?
• Am I able to tell my parents or caregivers what I need culturally to feel supported?

• What does the culture teach about wellbeing for families?
• Is my family aware of what the culture teaches about the wellbeing for women, men, youth, and Elders?

Goal 4: Indigenous people living with or affected by HIV experience caring, supportive, culturally safe and culturally informed environments.

• Do I know where my family members feel safe, cared for and supported?

• What makes my family members feel safe, cared for and supported?

• What makes my family members feel supported?

• What does cultural safety mean to my family, and how can I help support that?
